The D1 motorway connection to Ukraine from Slovakia. Peter Kmec, the Deputy Prime Minister responsible for the recovery plan, emphasized that negotiations between the Ukrainian and Slovak governments are taking place at the highest political level. Kmec spoke about major infrastructural projects aimed at facilitating border crossings between Slovakia and Ukraine in both directions. These topics are likely to play a central role in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine and could mean new investments in the eastern part of Slovakia. However, the difficulty lies in not knowing when the war will end. Moreover, the construction of new motorways can take years, as Slovak experiences often show delays.
Speaking about transport infrastructure, the expansion of the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing is of paramount importance, as it is a key junction for both passenger and freight traffic. It is currently not prepared to handle higher freight traffic. The expansion of the border crossing is planned, Kmec explained. – This is related to the development of road infrastructure. We need to build a highway from Košice all the way to the border crossing, the Deputy Prime Minister added. They are counting on financing from the European Commission, and Slovakia also intends to use the resources of private investors to realize the infrastructural projects. According to Kmec, it will be essential for the projects to advance in parallel, namely the expansion of the border crossing and the construction of the D1 e-vignette from Košice to Ukraine. Additionally, another important topic is the development and strengthening of rail transport towards Ukraine through the Čierna nad Tisou - Chop railway crossing.
